Natural Burial Sites

Natural burials are gaining in popularity and more sites are being made available.

These sites vary greatly, so it’s a good idea to check if a site is registered with the Association of Natural Burial Grounds. With over 250 green burial sites to choose from in the UK, there may well be one relatively close to you.

What is a natural burial?

A natural burial is often referred to as a green burial or a woodland burial. It provides an environmentally-friendly alternative to a cremation or traditional burial. The idea is to return the body to the earth in a natural way.

A sustainably sourced wooden grave marker

It is possible to use a designated woodland, meadow or park for a natural burial. It will depend on the site as to whether the grave can be marked. While a headstone is not permitted, the place of rest can often be marked with a tree, flowers or other plant. Alternatively, many sites allow our sustainably sourced wooden grave markers to be used.

Why choose a willow coffin?

In keeping with the ethos of a natural burial, the coffin must be environmentally friendly and decompose easily. Willow is an incredibly sustainable and eco-friendly choice.

All our coffins are made on our Somerset farm with willow grown and processed here. They are 100% plastic free and by selecting toggle closures the coffin is also free of any metal. All our willow coffins are suitable for natural burial.

Natural burial costs

In addition to the cost of the coffin, the natural burial plot and the grave marker, there may also be a fee for digging the grave. Your Funeral Director will be able to advise you of the costs involved.
